Who is the course suitable for?
Typically, candidates who undertake NEBOSH environmental training have a responsibility for managing environmental issues as part of their work. However, it is also suitable for anyone who wishes to start pursuing or advancing a career in environmental management.
There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification.
Course modules
There are two modules covered in this NEBOSH Certificate:
- Environmental management. This unit is made up of nine elements and covers the foundations in environmental management through to dealing with environmental emergencies.
- Assessing environmental aspects and associated impacts. This Is the practical assessment part of the course. It is carried out in the candidate’s workplace, and they must submit the practical assessment within 14 days of the exam date.
Assessments / Examinations
The EMC1 open book exam is completed electronically and submitted through the NEBOSH exam portal. You have 24 hours from 11am (UK time) on exam day to complete and submit your exam paper. You will be requested to review a real-life scenario and answer theoretical and practical questions around environmental management.
The EMC2 is a practical assessment, where learners can assess environmental aspects and impacts on their chosen workplace. This can be completed at a place of work or at home and is submitted by email according to deadline. You must successfully pass both units to achieve your full NEBOSH Environmental Management Certificate.

The NEBOSH Environmental Management Certificate covers the following key areas:
- Justify environmental management in the workplace using ethical, legal and financial arguments, linking these to wider environmental issues including sustainable development.
- Recognise workplace activities which may be subject to environmental legislation or enforcement.
- Understand the requirements of, and work within, an environmental management system, whilst contributing to continual improvement
- Assess environmental aspects and associated impacts, determining significant aspects and evaluating current controls.
- Support environmental emergency planning.
- Understand the importance of reducing environmental harm; identify sources of noise, air, and water pollution; and suggest suitable control measures.
- Understand the benefits and limitations of a range of energy sources and suggest suitable measures to increase energy efficiency.
